The stitch count for this cloth includes counting the single
crochet and spaces all as stitches. In other words,
after row 4 you will have 8 sc and 2 spaces for a total of 10 stitches.

You can make this without the chains and spaces.
Just single crochet in the first stitch and increase in the second,
single crochet to the last 2 stitches and increase in the next stitch and
single crochet in the last.
When you decrease make then decreases in the first two and last
two sttitches.
